 2017 Preview 


       Tuscaloosa Academy finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-6 record. With their 2-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class AAA region one, the Knights earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Tuscaloosa Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Monroe Academy by a score of 46-14.

       Tuscaloosa Academy took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2010. The Knights lost as many games as in any season since 2010.

       Since 2010, Tuscaloosa Academy has gone a combined 50-27. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class AAA over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 24 seasons, Tuscaloosa Academy has managed to compile a record of 128-136. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class AAA and 24th in the AISA.

       The Knights are led by head coach Robert Johnson who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 47-19 over the past six seasons at Tuscaloosa Academy. Under his direction the Knights have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Johnson. Coach Johnson led Tuscaloosa Academy to a state championship in 2012.

       Coach Johnson's overall record as a head football coach in twenty season stands at 133-86 (60.7%). His 133 wins rank th among active coaches in the AISA. Over the course of his career, Coach Johnson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fifteen times and won five region championships.

       The Tuscaloosa Academy Knights will play in Class AAA region one during the 2017 season.

       With a little luck and some improvement, the Knights could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. They have managed to qualify for the playoffs every year since 2009 and hopes are high to extend that streak.

       The Knights open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Autauga Academy on Friday, August 25 at Generals Field. Last year the Autauga Academy Generals finished with an overall record of 13-0 and in first place in Class AA region two. The Generals won the Class AA State Championship last season when they defeated Escambia Academy by a score of 28-21 in Troy.

       Tuscaloosa Academy and Autauga Academy have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Knights have a 1-6-0 record against the Generals. They last met in 2016 with Autauga Academy winning by a score of 54-32.

       Tuscaloosa Academy returns AISA All-State Junior kicker Trey Finnison. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
